The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley. Its mist-covered hillsides are blanketed by one of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rain forest, which dates back over 25,000 years and contains almost 400 species of plants. More famously, this “impenetrable forest” also protects an estimated 460 mountain gorillas – including several habituated families.

This biologically diverse region also provides shelter to a further 120 species of mammal, including several primate species such as baboons and chimpanzees, as well as elephants and antelopes. There are around 350 species of birds hosted in this forest, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

Overview

This 2 Night / 3 Day fly-in safari, is a fabulous safari – specially designed for those who are short of time, but want to see the rare and endangered Mountain Gorillas and meet the Batwa tribe.

This safari includes flights over the beautiful highlands of Uganda boasting incredible scenery. There is a drive from the airstrip via local villages to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, from where you will be able enjoy a thrilling visit with the Mountain Gorillas!

After two nights here, with plenty of time to explore this incredible part of the world, you drive back to Kihihi airstrip and return to Entebbe.

Uganda boasts some of the best bird watching in Africa, with over 1000 different species, including the rare shoebill and the remarkable grey crowned crane. Luxury accommodation, professional guides and custom-made safari vehicles – this safari will be the trip of a lifetime.

Itinerary

The flying time is just over an hour (depending on routing and aircraft used). Upon arrival you will be met by your Unzip Africa guide and driven to Buhoma Lodge, located inside the national park boundaries at the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The drive takes approximately two hours and leads you through local villages and mountain roads – lovely scenery and very interesting en route!

Overnight at Buhoma Lodge

Following an early breakfast at the lodge, travel to the Park Headquarters in Bwindi Forest to meet your guides for the day and begin your gorilla tracking experience. Experienced guides and trackers will accompany your party on an early morning trek into the dense rain forest on the mountain slopes.

Please note that gorilla tracking is strenuous with treks ranging from 45 mins up to eight hours, at high altitudes in hot African conditions. The thrill of the hour you spend quietly observing these gentle giants once you find them is so worth the trek to get there! Although mountain gorillas are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed, viewing success rates are over 95%.

After breakfast, depart Bwindi Forest and drive to Kihihi Airstrip for your scheduled flight to Entebbe Airport.

1. What is Gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is a wildlife activity that involves hiking up the tropical forests of Africa to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking is only done in three East African countries in the world namely Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

How much does it cost to see gorillas?

The gorilla permit cost in Uganda is $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents and 250000 Uganda shillings for East African community citizens. However, the cost of seeing gorillas is further determined by the type of accommodation, transportation and additional activities of interest on safari. These must be considered when putting together a gorilla tour itinerary.

Is mountain gorilla tracking/trekking safe?

Because of the gorilla physique definitely, safety will come to your mind but I can guarantee you that yes mountain gorilla tracking in Africa is one the safety if you compare to other wildlife encounter in Africa, gorilla tracking is an amazing activity more especially when you finally catch a glimpse of a mountain gorilla.

When is the best time to go for gorilla tracking or trekking?

Personally, we can assure that gorilla tracking can be done any day throughout the year but some people prefer to go for gorilla trek during the dry season in the month of June, July, August, September, October, December-during Christmas season, January and February.

March, April, May, and November are considered as Rainy seasons which makes some people think that tracking during Rainey season is more challenging but I tell that gorilla tracking experience is the same.

What do I need to bring for gorilla tracking-trekking?

1. You need long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect you from insects’ bites, hot vegetation, and thorny trees.
2.Insect repellent is a must-have if you’re traveling in Africa because those impenetrable forests apart from mountain gorillas it is also home to different insects, so having insect repellent will be a good idea
3.You will also need a Walking stick which is provided at no cost by the park rangers/guides, the walking stick will help when tracking up and down in the forest.
4. Drinking water and a packed lunch provided by the lodge or the tour operator you booked your safari with, you cannot afford to miss out on drinking water and packed lunch because you cannot tell how long your trekking will last so food and is a must.
5. Walking/hiking boots as you will be walking a forest that is muddy and wet you need waterproof hiking boots which important during your trekking.
6. You may need some warm sweater because in the evenings and mornings sometimes Bwindi Forest can be cool so it’s always nice to have a warm sweater with you
7. We also recommend that you bring a rain jacket because gorilla tracking is done in the rain forest which means it can rain at any time of the day
8. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and hat are also nice to bring with so that they can protect you from strong sun

How long does gorilla tracking last?

Gorilla tracking starts every day throughout the day year at 7:30 am with a briefing from the ranger/guides taking through the guidelines you must follow trek gorilla after a briefing at 8:oo am the trekking begins and the time spent in the forest dependents on the movements of the mountain gorillas.

Can I fly to Rwanda and trek gorillas in Bwindi Forest Uganda?

Flying into Rwanda and cross the border to Uganda is the easiest way to access the Bwindi impenetrable forest national park of Uganda, it is only 3 to 4 hours drive from Kigali international airport in Rwanda to reach Bwindi forest in Uganda while if you fly to Entebbe international airport of Uganda you need 8 to 9 hours drive from Entebbe to reach Bwindi impenetrable forest. So when you fly to Kigali airport you save about 4 hours on the road, flying to Rwanda you save double 5 hours on traveling time and $900 on a gorilla permit.

Book your Gorilla trekking Permits in Advance?

Mountain gorilla trekking is limited to 8 people per gorilla family once a day and gorilla permits are also booked on first come first saver bass so we recommend that you book and pay for your trekking permit far in advance to avoid disappointments.

What is the minimum age for gorilla habituation experience?

The minimum age for gorilla habituation is 15 years and above and all the book guidelines are the same as those for gorilla trekking. In terms of numbers, gorilla habituation is limited to only 4 people per day on a daily basis.
